Meet: Western C Divisional

Date: 2011-05-21
MISSOULA - Charlo's third straight divisional title in boys' track was thanks to the usual suspects: Chico Stipe, Stephen Delaney, Chance Rosenbaum, Michael Smith and ... Austin Bauer?

Bauer, a senior sprinter, came through with wins in the 100-meter dash and long jump as the Vikings piled up 149 points at the Western C divisional track and field meet at Missoula County Stadium.

Delaney also won two events - the hurdles - on Saturday and anchored a long relay team that lowered its best time in Class C to 3:33.98. Rosenbaum led a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault by clearing a C-best 13 feet, 8 inches.

It was way too much for Twin Bridges (second with 76 points) and Victor (72) to keep up with. But if Charlo wants to win another title next week on this same oval, Bauer could be a key.

"He's running hard and he's healthy," said Stipe, who was fourth in the 100 on Saturday. "And I think he's running with more pride - being a senior, he wants to go out with a bang by winning a state title."

Complicating Bauer's athletic endeavors has been a heavy academic workload. Due to Business Professionals of America, Bauer missed meets to go to the state and then national BPA competitions.

"Then we had spring break in the middle of that," noted Charlo coach Bret Thompson. "He's one we had last year but now, I don't know - he's been able to put a few meets together. That's the stuff you put up with when you have smart athletes. It's not a bad thing."

Bauer, who holds a 3.94 grade point average and wants to walk on for football at the University of Montana (as does Stipe), won the 100 in 11.61 seconds. He went 20-7.5 to win the long jump, and was second in the 200. Not bad for somebody who had a hard time training while competing academically in Washington.

"We didn't get much in," he said. "But I don't think it affected me too much. I felt it the first day of practice, but I had a good day at districts in Polson."

Delaney had a good day as well, capping it with a dominant anchor leg on the long relay. That was his fourth gold; he also won Friday's 400.

Rosenbaum and teammate Webb O'Neill both had personal bests in the pole vault. O'Neill cleared 13-0. Rosenbaum won the 800 on Friday. The Vikings' Smith also won Saturday's 1,600 to complete a distance sweep.

It was a banner day and could've been better. Four thousandths of a second is all that kept Charlo from a rare double.

That was Seeley-Swan's margin of victory in the girls' 1,600-meter relay, and the Blackhawks' win kept the Vikings from tying Shields Valley for the team title.

Shields Valley won its first girls' divisional crown since Clyde Park and Wilsall combined in the early 1990s, scoring 78 points.

Charlo, with freshman Aspen Runkel winning the 300 hurdles and getting depth points throughout, couldn't quite match the heroics of Shields Valley sprinter Blair Street and finished with 76 points. Seeley-Swan was third with 62.

Street ran Class C's best time in the 200 Saturday - 26.81 - and also won the 100.

Another impressive time belonged to Lima's Ona Congdon, who won the 800 in 2:24.87. Congdon won the 400 Friday, and was among three double-winners on the girls' side.

The third was Harrison's Shannon Young, who is winding down a stellar career. She swept the 1,600 and 3,200 for the fourth straight time at divisionals. She also owns two Western C 800 titles.

Charlo leaned heavily on Runkel, who was third in the 100 hurdles and second in Friday's 400. Saturday she beat Shields Valley's Callie Schwartz in the 300 hurdles, and matched Schwartz's Class C-best time of 47.56.

"She's steadily learning the game," Thompson said of Runkel. "In junior high she was dealing with other eighth-graders and all of a sudden she's thrown out there with the wolves - not only sophomores but juniors and seniors.

"She works really hard - a lot of her success just has to do with work ethic."

No school has swept the Western C boys' and girls' titles in the last 20 seasons.

Drummond's Jessi Dahl (pole vault) and Nate Bignell (shot put) brought home gold. The top five place winners advanced to the State C meet next Friday and Saturday at Missoula County Stadium. (Missoulian, May 22, 2011)
