Meet: Western B Divisional

Date: 2011-05-21
MISSOULA - Bigfork's Vals kept their hold on Western B track and field, but the spotlight was stolen by a sophomore with a late burst and some solid aviator shades.

Hope Reid of Thompson Falls set the lone meet record Saturday at Missoula County Stadium, breezing through the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best 15.14 seconds, breaking the 3-year-old divisional mark set by Florence's Katie Niemeir.

But Reid saved her best for the 300 hurdles, where she stormed from way back to edge Bigfork's Mallery Knoll. Both had personal bests in the race; Reid won in 45.79.

"Do you remember Landon Bowery from Ennis?" asked Randy Symon, Thompson Falls' coach. "Landon would be third or fourth place coming out of the turn, but then he'd take off. He was fresh and would kick everybody's (butt)."

This is not a strategy Symon endorses.

"The first three hurdles go fast," repeated Reid, smiling underneath shades borrowed from teammate Lindsey Owens. "But I still haven't done that. It's more like the last four or five."

By then Knoll was a good 15 meters in front, and yet Reid caught her for one of her four wins on Saturday. She finished the meet with five.

"She's capable of running even better because she didn't run as strong as she could," Symon asserted. "But holy cow. Just how dominant she was over the last 100 meters of that race - it was unbelievable."

Reid, in addition to her first 300 hurdles victory against Knoll, also won the high jump Saturday and the 200. She won the pole vault on Friday.

The 200 victory mirrored her 300 hurdles win: middling start, great finish. She ran a personal-best 26.44.

She scored 50 of her team's 67 points. The Bluehawks were third in the team race.

Bigfork, with Knoll winning the 100 meters, finishing second in both hurdles and anchoring the Vals' victorious long relay, scored 132 points. Superior was a distant second at 74.

Darby's boys won their third straight Western B title. The Tigers capped their day with an exciting win over Florence in the long relay - Doug Raymer got the lead on the second leg and Jeremy Campbell lost it and regained it on the third - on the way to 100 points.

The Falcons were second at 88 and Thompson Falls was next with 85, and the day's final race summed up the meet for Darby coach Steve Gideon.

"The Florence kids wanted it," Gideon said. "We've been going back and forth, so this is awesome.

"Jeremy had to run out of his shoes and he did. That kid really wanted him. He just backed off a little bit, relaxed, recovered and came right back. It was fantastic."

Aaron Johnston ran the anchor leg and saw Dylan Reynolds try to pass him on the inside on the back stretch.

"It's tough when you're running out there in front, because all you hear is people yelling at you, from both teams," said Johnston, who fell to third in the 100 but rallied to win the 200 Saturday. "I knew I had a faster 400, so when he came up on me I started my kick right there. I felt good that last about 150 meters."

Darby finished in 3:28.92, its best time this season. Florence clocked 3:30.29, another PR.

Raymer completed a rare triple, holding off teammate Sean Abrahamsen to win the 1,600 in 4:31.06. Abrahamsen ran 4:33.33 to edge Loyola Sacred Heart's Lyle Pocha.

Raymer won the 800 and 3,200 on Friday.

"Doug is just an animal," said Johnston. "He's killing it every way."

Reynolds, in his first year of track, won the 300 hurdles in an excellent time of 40.61.

Thompson Falls got wins from Chalis Wilson in the high jump and Cody Phillips, who threw 174 feet, 6 inches to win the javelin. It was the second victory for Phillips, who won the pole vault Friday.

Johnston also won twice with a 400 victory on Friday. Brandon Forson of Deer Lodge completed a throwing sweep, though his discus win came with a sub-par mark of 144-8.

Plains' Taylor Firestone leapt 44-1/2 to win the triple jump; he won the long jump Friday. He was shooting for the meet record of 45-9.

"I couldn't get my mark my last two jumps," said the senior, who has gone 46-3.75 this season.

No meet marks fell besides Niemeir's though there were some season-bests: Eureka's Bailey Malecha won the girls' 800 in 2:21.43, and Florence's Megan Leathers threw a career best 129-6.5 in the discus.

Reid, meanwhile, can get ready for state next week in Butte. Her immediate goals were met, and that included beating Knoll in the 300s for the first time in "16 to 20 tries" and... poultry?

"I got some chickens and to keep them I had to run under 46," she said. "I'm looking forward to state. She (Knoll) is really fast and I'm expecting her to come back strong - stronger than she was today - and run another great race." (Missoulian, May 22, 2011)
