Meet: Northwest A Divisional
Date: 2011-05-21POLSON - The Columbia Falls boys' track and field team repeated as the divisional champion at the Northwestern A meet on Saturday.
The Wildcats won four out of six events on the track and Nate Thompson won twice in the field as the team recorded 201.5 points to best the likes of Ronan-St. Ignatius (89.5) and Libby (82.5).
Thompson was joined by Derrick Williams as a double-winner for the Wildcats. Thompson took the javelin and long jump titles, including the latter in 21 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Williams won the 800 in 1 minute, 57.84 seconds and the 3,200 in 10:21.36. He also won the 1,600 on Friday.
Also on the track, Anthony Correa won the 200 in 23.39 and Columbia Falls won the 1,600 relay in 3:28.83, which is the best time in the state this spring by a Class A school.
Ronan's Jordan Franklin was the only other double-winner on Saturday. He won the 100-meter dash in addition to clearing 6-5 in the high jump, which now ranks as the best in his classification. Libby's Kody Berget swept the hurdles with his 300 victory on Saturday.
The Whitefish girls, behind freshman standout Marlow Schulz, scored their first divisional title since 2008.
Schulz won the 100, 200 and 800 - lowering her PRs in each race - to help lead the Bulldogs to 237 points. That was more than enough to defeat meet host Polson (116) and third-place Ronan (73).
Whitefish's only other victory on Saturday was the 1,600 relay.
St. Ignatius' Adessa Durglo was the only other two-event winner on the girls' side. She won the high jump (5-2) and long jump (17-0 1/4), and ranks second behind Hamilton's Kelsi Almond among Class A jumpers. (Missoulian, May 22, 2011)
