Meet: Southwest A Divisional

Date: 2011-05-21
CORVALLIS - In a surprise to none, the Corvallis track and field program swept the boys' and girls' titles at the Southwestern A divisional meet on Saturday.

Anybody who's seen star hurdler Paige Squire and the rest of the Blue Devils this spring knows the precision they bring meet-in and meet-out. However, there was one surprise at the conclusion.

While the Corvallis boys won their third straight divisional championship, Saturday's crown was the first by the girls' team since the school moved up to the Class A ranks.

And what better way to celebrate than with five meet records.

Squire set two of the standards, including one she previously held in the 300 hurdles. Squire finished that race in 43.72 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in prep history, according to the Montana High School Association. No high school girl has gone that fast in the intermediate hurdles since Big Sandy's Kourtney Danreuther went 43.68 at the State C meet in 2006. The state record is 43.34 by Malta's Mariah Guilfoyle.

Squire also won the 200 in 25.20 to break a 6-year-old mark by Anaconda's Autumn Domitrovich, and ran a leg on the Blue Devils' winning 1,600 relay team that finished in 3:54.24. That broke the old record by more than seven seconds.

Also for Corvallis, Lakyn Connors and Kaycie Stewart set records. Connors won the triple jump in 36 feet, 10 inches and Stewart cruised to the 3,200 title in 12:12.74. Freshman Ayden Eickoff (800) was the only Devils winner on Saturday who didn't set a record.

Hamilton was the only other team to have more than one individual winner. Kelsi Almond added the 100 dash to the long jump title she won Friday and Meghan Kratofil won the discus Saturday.

The Corvallis boys rolled up 190 points en route to the team title. Six individual wins on Saturday helped fuel the runaway victory.

Dillon (125) was the next closest team, while Stevensville (90) rounded out the trophy recipients.

Corvallis' Colby Henderson won the 800 in a personal-best 1:57.70, which should put him among the top three in the state this season. Also on the track, Chris Jessop won the 3,200 and both he and Henderson contributed a leg on the Blue Devils' winning 1,600 relay team.

Corvallis' other wins came from Logan Connors (javelin), Jimmy Henderson (discus) and Luke Walden (high jump).

Stevensville's Josh Lords swept the 100 and 200 races and Joshua Haynes won the triple jump. (Missoulian, May 22, 2011)
