Meet: Central A Divisional

Date: 2011-05-21
BUTTE - A deep pool of talent paced the Belgrade Panthers to boys’ and girls’ team titles at the Central A Divisional track and field meet, which concluded Saturday at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

Belgrade scored 194 2/3 points to win the girls’ side, and 191 to claim the boys’ trophy. Lewistown was second in both team events, while the Butte Central boys took fourth — one point out of third and just five away from second.

The Maroons got another good showing in the throwing events, headlined by Jonathan Richards’ winning toss in the javelin. The senior standout didn’t record his personal best Saturday, but Richards’ mark of 171-6 was more than 14 feet better than second place.

Also, Butte Central junior Zach Kasperick earned a trip to state with his fourth-place throw of 148-3.

The discus saw two more Maroons added to the roster of Butte Central athletes who will compete at next weekend’s Class A State meet in Missoula, as Alex Ritter and Jake Simkins went 4-5 in the discus. Ritter’s spin of 230-4 was two and a half inches better than Simkins’ best toss Saturday.

Both are displaying form that could earn the Maroons team points at state, though Lewistown’s Shayne Durbin showed why he will be the man to beat in Missoula with a divisional-winning 166-8½. That was almost 11 feet farther than his previous best mark, which was already the best in the Class A ranks.

Butte Central’s Kevin Burt soared to tie for second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-6. Fighting a sore back, Burt also narrowly missed at 5-8.

BC senior Riley Davis took fifth in the high jump, qualifying in an event he wasn’t expected to. Davis was, however, one of the favorites in the triple jump, where he scratched on his first two preliminary efforts. A third would have eliminated him for the season, so the pressure was on.

“I like the pressure,” Davis said later, after taking second with a leap of 39-3 in the finals. A jump in the mid 38s on his final preliminary jump got him to the finals and produced an audible sigh of relief from Maroon fans and coaches.

“My heart was beating out there,” Davis said, adding that he kept his eyes fixed on the takeoff board on his final prelim run.

“We told him to take a peek at the board,” said Maroons head coach Zack Stajcar.

The Maroon boys also qualified both relay teams for State, as the mile team race saw BC finish up third, while the sprinters checked in at fourth.

Aschan Richards anchored the mile relay, which saw Jonathan Richards take the second leg. Burt had been slated to take the baton, but his back injury led to the substitution.

“That race is not fun.” Richards said while regaining his breath after his 400 meters. “Not until you see your teammates finish, anyway.”

Richards said he wasn’t satisfied with his mark in the shot put Friday, and that he was looking forward to another week of practice to perfect his technique.

“We’ll work on fixing those little flaws this week,” Stajcar said.

One of the tightest races of the day came in the boys’ 100 final, where Charles Old Chief of Browning edged Mason Case of Havre in a photo finish. The top four finishers in the 100 were the same as the top four in the 200, though Old Chief had a slightly bigger lead at the end.

On the girls’ side, Butte Central worked through some ups and downs over the weekend.

Kacie McKeon gave the Maroons a surprise when she notched a fifth-place finish in the 100, making state in an event she doesn’t usually focus on. Add that to her fourth-place showing in the triple jump, and McKeon’s weekend was a good one.

“I was feeling kind of sick and I didn’t warm up for the 100, so that was kind of a surprise,” McKeon said, noting that she has had a consistent time in the 100 all season long. That steady pace helped her hit the board for a 32-9 mark in the triple jump.

Other surprises for the Butte Central girls include young Alysea Pica, who took sixth in the long jump after joining the team midway through the season. Also, Chandra McCurdy improved her personal best in the javelin by three feet to take fifth and qualify for State.

On the other hand, a half inch was all that stood between Mollie McIntyre and a berth in the state meet. McIntyre’s triple jump mark of 32-5½ was a good one for her, but it was half an inch shy of the fifth-place jump of Leighton Hirsch of Belgrade. McIntyre scored a team point, but missed out on State, though she has two more competitive seasons ahead at Butte Central.

Stajcar said his team will head west to Missoula on Thursday to get their final practice of the season in on the same track as the final meet. (Montana Standard, May 22, 2011)
