Meet: Western AA Divisional
Date: 2011-05-21KALISPELL - The Kalispell Glacier boys' track and field team won the Western AA divisional title for the second time in three years on Saturday at Legends Stadium.
The Wolfpack closed the two-day meet with 134.5 points. Last year's champ Helena Capital was second with 96 points, and Kalispell Flathead (81.5) edged Missoula Big Sky (78) for third.
The day, however, belonged to Big Sky senior Michael Duncan, who won three events with spectacular marks.
Duncan won the 100 in 11.09 seconds, the 400 in 50.25 and the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 4 1/2 inches. The last mark is the best by a Class AA jumper this spring.
Glacier was led by Jacob Leininger, who won the 110 hurdles to go with the 300 title he won on Friday, and Tanner Morrison, who won the discus at 159-3. The Wolfpack won three events on Friday.
Sentinel teammates Jake Messerly (200) and Jake Turner (1,600) each won races Saturday. Turner nipped Flathead's Zach Perrin at the finish line to win by one-hundredth of a second in 4:17.53. Perrin had the best 1,600 time in the state at 4:21.3 prior to divisionals.
Perrin also ran a leg on the Braves' winning 1,600 relay team that finished in 3:30.12.
The Helena High girls won their first divisional crown since 2000, despite not having any individual winners on Saturday and only one for the meet.
The Bengals scored 121 points to beat out Flathead (93) and Big Sky (92). Defending meet champion Glacier (80) was fourth.
Again, it was a Big Sky sprinter stealing the show as junior Morgan Braby won the 100 and 200 in 12.56 and 25.38, respectively. She also ran anchor on the Eagles' 400 relay team that won on Friday.
Sentinel sophomore Liz Harper added the 100 hurdle title to the 300 hurdle title she won the day before, and blazed her way to the open 400 crown in 57.53. She is the only high school girl in the state to crack 58 seconds in the 400 this spring. Harper's high hurdles time (14.96) was a personal best as she joined Corvallis' Paige Squire as the only girls to finish in less than 15 seconds.
Missoula Hellgate sophomore Paige Gilchrist won the 1,600 (5:07.96) and Flathead's Kwyn Johnson won the triple jump (36-9 1/4) to establish personal bests in those events. Also, Sentinel's Anna Pershouse won the discus. (Missoulian, May 22, 2011)
