Meet: Butte-Bozeman Dual

Date: 2011-05-12
BUTTE - Butte High girls’ track wins final home dual meet, Bozeman tops boys

Butte High split its final home dual meet of the season Thursday, as the Bulldog girls edged Bozeman 74-71 and the Hawk boys beat Butte 93-52.

The girls’ side saw a fairly clean split between the longer distances and the sprints. Butte High’s Elsa Janney led the charge for the Bulldogs, who ruled the shorter distance races. Bozeman was equally dominant in the longer races, but the Bulldogs found the three points they needed for the day’s win.

“Our sprinters took over right at the start,” said Butte girls’ coach Tom Roberts. “They had the depth in the distance.”

Janney was simply dominant in winning the 100, 200, 400, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. She was also key in the Bulldogs’ sizable win in the sprint relay.

Butte High got a 1-2 finish in the high jump, as both Keli Zemljak and Kinsley Rafish cleared 5-1, half a foot above their closest competitor. Both Butte jumpers also cleared 5-3 — but just for a second, and not long enough to get the nod.

A jumper may touch the bar while leaping over it, but must get off the landing pits with the bar still in place for the jump to count. Both jumpers made the height, but neither was able to exit the pits before the bar wobbled off the standards. Zemljak took the win on criteria.

“They both know they can get it,” Roberts said. “That’s a key. They’ve both qualified for state, and they’ll be jumping on their own track.”

The Bulldogs also swept the triple jump, as Bailey Harper went 32-8 to win, while the Emerson sisters each scored a victory Thursday. Kabri Emerson won the javelin to go with her third-place effort in the disc, while Rashae Emerson won the shot put.

Butte’s Kaitlin Rudy threw far enough to win the disc, but her throw was disqualified after a coach noted the jewelry in her ear, a violation. Rudy’s 115-foot throw was erased and she had to settle for second at 108-7.

Butte High’s boys didn’t enjoy the same level of success, but did have some bright spots Thursday.

Junior sprinter Cody Carriger led a top-three Butte sweep of the 100, and went on to take second in the 200. Josh Panasuk gave a great effort in winning the 800 in 2:00.49, and then turned in the fastest 400 split on Butte’s mile relay team.

Jake Dallaserra, who has steadily improved in the triple jump from week to week this season, won the event with a hop of 40-10, though he clearly has the capability to extend that mark. Dallaserra was also second in the high jump at 5-10.

Mark Huntington scorched to his best time of the season in the 300 hurdles, a 40.62, and was cruising through the 110s when a misstep cost him his rhythm and the lead. He settled for fourth, but also came away with the knowledge he can run with the fastest in the state.

Butte High javelin standout Dunk Abbott won the event at 165-10, more than 16 feet ahead of Matt Berg, who also took second place in the discus.

“We didn’t have a great day,” Charlie Merrifield said of his team’s overall performance, though he did nod to Huntington and Panasuk for excellent individual marks.

“Hopefully, next week we’ll be ready,” he said, and then amended the thought. “No, next week we had better be ready.” (Montana Standard, May 13, 2011)
