Meet: District 1B
Date: 2011-05-14GREAT FALLS - Her times weren't all that spectacular, but no matter. All Deni Fitzpatrick wanted to do Saturday at Memorial Stadium was qualify for divisional competition in each of her four events.
The Cut Bank High senior was successful, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and both hurdles races, all in convincing fashion. She also ran a leg on the runner-up 400 relay team.
The effort sparked Cut Bank to a second consecutive District 1B girls' championship. The Wolves scored 168 points, via places in 14 of the 17 events, to easily outdistance Cascade (113) and Choteau (97).
It was a little closer in the boys' competition, as Fairfield tallied 138 points to finish ahead of Cascade (105) and Choteau (103). Bo Harris and Slade Allen each won two events to lead the victorious Eagles, who qualified athletes in all but two events.
"I wasn't focusing on times today. I was trying to get to the next level," said Fitzpatrick, referring to the Northern B divisional meet on Saturday in Glasgow. "I'm feeling good about everything."
Fitzpatrick has been having some trouble with her shins, she explained, and took a week off to get rested up.
She appeared to be in top form Saturday, winning the 100 meters in 13.1 seconds, the 200 in 27.5, the 100 hurdles in 16.0 and the 300 hurdles in 47.4.
Those wins came in windy conditions, something Fitzpatrick is definitely used to. "The wind makes it tough (for practice and meets) in Cut Bank. It wasn't as bad as it usually is," she said.
Fitzpatrick has won three straight state championships in both the 100 and 200. She also won both the 100 and 300 hurdles races last year, leading Cut Bank to the state title.
The Wolves performed well as a team Saturday, she emphasized, and it will take another strong effort at the divisional meet to put them in position to earn a repeat title May 27-28 at Butte's Bulldog Memorial Stadium. "Everyone did really well today. We've done things we haven't done before," said Fitzpatrick, who is headed to Carroll College on a track scholarship. "We're feeling good about everything."
Junior Erika Karcher also had a good day on the track for Cut Bank. She placed second in both the 100 and 200 and helped the 400 relay team earn runner-up honors
The Wolves were led in the field by junior Jordyn Vaile, who placed first in the shot put and the discus and fifth in the javelin.
Karcher took second in the long jump, and seniors Brady Gray (javelin) and Ceanna Johnson (pole vault) also turned in second-place efforts.
Senior Mardee Clark had a productive day for the runner-up Cascade girls' team. She eanred the Badgers' only victory, in the 400 meters, and placed second in the 200 and third in the 100.
Senior Charlene Blair took second in both hurdles races and ran a leg on the second-place 1,600 relay team.
Third-place Choteau was led by senior Mariah Renteria, the winner of the 800 and 1,600, and sophomore Alisha Breen, who topped the field in both the high jump and javelin.
The Bulldogs' Brittany Fisher, a junior, placed second in both the 800 and 1,600 and teamed with Renteria, Kelci May and Ellie Zwerneman to win the 1,600 relay.
The first-place Fairfield boys had a big day in the field events. Harris, a junior, won both the shot put and discus; junior Trace Brady had the top javelin throw; and senior Slade Allen and junior Collin Allen finished second in the triple jump and long jump, respectively.
Slade Allen also won both the 110 and 300 hurdles. Sophomore teammate Tucker Meyer was second in both of those races.
Runner-up Cascade got a victory from sophomore Christian Smith in the 3,200 and a 1-2 finish in the pole vault by senior Nick Keen and junior Levi Nelson. Senior Eddy Ferguson took second in the discus.
Junior Jacob Horn paced third-place Choteau with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200. Senior Adam DeBruycker won the 400 and finished second in the 400; sophomore Kyle Gollahon was first in the triple jump; and senior David Lightner placed second in the high jump and third in the pole vault.
The top scorer in the boys' competition was Shelby senior Chase Ballantyne. He took home blue ribbons in the 100, 200 and long jump, and helped the Coyotes earn wins in the 400 and 1,600 relays.
