Meet: District 8C

Date: 2011-05-13
GREAT FALLS - For an athlete who has a couple of screws in her back, Mariah Gondeiro is running — and hurdling — pretty well.

Take Friday's District 8C track and field meet Friday at Memorial Stadium, for example. Gondeiro won the girls' 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters and both hurdles races, good for 50 of Belt High's runner-up total of 160 points.

Geraldine piled up 170 points to win the girls' team championship. Augusta was third in the seven-team competition, with 73 points.

Riley Shaw won four individual events and ran a leg on the first-place 1,600 relay team, helping Fort Benton cruise to the boys' team title. The Longhorns tallied 176 points to easily outdistance Belt (113) and Centerville (94).

Early in April of 2010, Gondiero fractured her back in two different places and underwent surgery that ended her junior track season. The surgery included the insertion of a screw in two different bones.

Enusing rehabilitation forced Gondeiro "do twice the work" she was accustomed to. "It made me work twice as hard. It took a lot of dedication and motivation," she said.

She wasn't supposed to compete in cross country last fall, Gondeiro said, but "wanted to help the team win another state title." She placed fifth, leading Belt/Centerville to a fifth consecutive state Class C championship.

During those same months she also played a key role on the Belt volleyball team.

This past winter Gondeiro was one of the top players on the Belt basketball team that placed third at the state tournament.

Now she's back on the track, helping her school win even more trophies.

"I'm feeling a lot better. I'm getting stronger each week," Gondeiro said.

Strong enough to set personal records in the the 800 (2:27.08), 3,200 (11:58.2) and 300 hurdles (50.0) in Friday's competition. She set PRs by 10 seconds in the 800 and by 20 seconds in the 3,200, she said.

The balmy weather made a big difference. "I like running in heat. The cold hurts my back," Gondeiro said. "(The weather) for the two mile was perfect."

Next Thursday, in the Ralph Halverson Northern C divisional meet at Memorial Stadium, she hopes to qualify for state in all five of her events. "I want to score enough points to help the team place in the top three (at the May 27-28 state meet)," she said.

Gondeiro signed last week to play basketball at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. "I had to decide between basketball and track. I'm really looking forward to playing basketball at Rocky."

Kara Gerke also had a big day for Belt, winning the 200 and 400 meters and helping the Huskies win the 1,600 relay.

Alex Rowland won both the shot put and discus and Brielle McKinley broke the tape in the 100 and ran a leg on the victorious 400 relay team to lead the first-place Geraldine girls' team. McKinley also placed second in both the 200 and 400.

Tayler Duvall (javelin), Hallie Bronec (high jump) and Elaina Juedeman (pole vault) also earned wins for the Tigers, who scored in every event except the 1,600 and 3,200.

Lacey Drew of Centerville took home titles in the long jump and triple jump.

The best finish for the Great Falls Central Catholic High/MSDB girls' team came in the 1,600 relay, where the Mustangs placed fourth.

Shaw earned titles in the boys' 100, 200, 400 and long jump, and also ran a leg on Fort Benton's first-place 1,600 relay team. He wasn't seriously challenged in any of his events.

"It was really nice to run in warm weather," Shaw said. "It's been tough to get practices in."

He wasn't too pleased with his 53.0 in the 400, but was happy to run an 11.5 in the 100 finals, he said. "That was a good time for me."

Shaw won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 5 inches, eight inches short of his season's best, and took the 200 in 23.4, 26 hundredths of a second slower than what he ran last week in Laurel.

He's confident entering the Northern divisional meet, hoping to qualify for state in five events.

Jackson Bramlette chipped in wins in the 800 and 1,600, and Blake Ereaux and Nathan Maughan earned titles in the shot put and pole vault, respectively. Maughan also helped Fort Benton win the 400 relay.

The top finisher for Great Falls Central/MSDB was Patrick McGuire, who placed third in the 800. (Great Falls Tribune, May 14, 2011)
