Meet: Helena City Meet

Date: 2011-05-12
HELENA -

On a bright, sunny Thursday highlighted by several multiple winners, two meet records, a near-photo finish and numerous personal bests, Helena High swept the 38th annual crosstown track and field meet at Vigilante Stadium.

In the girls competition, Helena beat Capital 88-56, while the boys meet was much closer with the Bengals edging the Bruins 76-69.

Spearheading coach Sheila Williams’ Helena High girls were the foursome of Callie Kanthack, Allison Morrison, Monica Grimsrud and Leah Esposito, who accounted for 55 of the maroon-and-silver’s points.

Kanthack, a freshman phenom, swept the sprints, winning the 100 (13.05 seconds), 200 (26.99) and 400 (1:01.44). Morrison captured the high jump with an intracity record of 5 feet, 6 inches, along wins in the long jump (16-8¾) and 800 (2:29.56).

“I made 5-6 last weekend, so I was glad to prove it wasn’t a one-time thing,” said Morrison, whose leap bested Darbee Sasek’s (Helena) mark of 5-5, set in 1997.

“I felt like I went pretty high, my coaches told me I cleared it by a couple inches, so maybe I can get to 5-7 or 5-8 next.”

The closest race of the day was the 400 relay, with the Bengal foursome of Kanthack, Kaitlin Oliver, Grimsrud and Morrison shading Capital in a dead heat to win by two one-hundredths of a second, 50.94-50.96.

Kanthack and Morrison — also part of the victorious 1,600 relay with Maddie Mueller and Grimsrud in 4:15.56 — were the meet’s high scorers with 17½ points apiece.

Grimsrud garnered the 100 hurdles (16.96) and 300 hurdles (48.05), while Esposito won the 1,600 (5:20.19) and 3,200 (12:13.01). Helena’s other winner was Kyndal Williams in the javelin, who heaved the spear 127-10, besting her old personal record by 11 feet.

“Before I always tensed up and tried too hard, but today I really relaxed, and it just kind of took off,” Williams said.

Winning for Capital were Taylor Corne, in the shot put (39-4¼) and discus (110-2); Julia Anderson in the triple jump (32-11½); and Emily Burk in the pole vault (8-6).

Elena Rickman — a four-year letterman for coach Shirley Chesterfield-Stanton’s Bruins competing in her last crosstown — took second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.

“I was a foot short of my bests in both,” Rickman said. “The sun got to me, and I’ve got a sore quad, so now I just need to concentrate on divisionals.”

The meet’s other record-breaker was Capital High’s Trey Spirlin, in the boys javelin. The Bruin senior fired a toss of 183-9, erasing Ryan Fetherston’s (Helena) 2007 standard of 181-2.

“I know Ryan real well, so it feels great to break his record,” Spirlin said. “My PR before that was 177, and before that 167, so I feel like I’m heating up at the right time.”

Pacing the Helena boys was junior Matt Barker, who won the 1,600 (4:34.24) and 3,200 (10:02.56).

The rest of the Bengal winners included Jordan Umsted in the 200 (23.30), Dillon Maddox in the 300 hurdles (42.50), Keenan Gerhart in the shot put (47-5½), Tanner Noel in the discus (136-1), Cory Allen in the high jump (6-0), and freshman Chance Sparrows in the long jump (19-2½).

The 400 relay was not as close as the girls’ race, but just as exciting.

Sean Blomquist came from behind on the corner on the third leg, getting even on the final handoff, and then anchor Dylan Simac outsprinted Teagen Jendro down the stretch to win 44.30-44.48.

“I think this is the first time this year we’ve had all good handoffs,” said Simac, who normally runs the third leg. “But I think I like anchor better — only one handoff.”

“Obviously it’s important for the kids to win the crosstown, but we’re still in training…we need a big meet at divisionals,” coach Tony Arntson said. “But we competed well today, and we’re getting closer to where we want to be.”

The big scorer for Capital was Jason Allred, who copped the pole vault with a state best of 14-8, and the triple jump (41-9). He was second in the long jump.

Other Capital winners were Gunnar Brekke in the 100 (11.61), Sawyer Moranville in the 400 (52.68), Killian Smith in the 800 (2:05.07), Beau Berg in the 110 hurdles (15.70), and the 1,600 relay (Berg, Connor Lamping, Moranville, Smith), in 3:33.56.

“Now the real track season starts,” Capital coach Lon Carter said, referring to divisionals and state. (Helena Independent, May 13, 2011)
