Meet: Greg Rice City Meet

Date: 2011-05-12
MISSOULA - This time the girls took center stage at the Greg Rice City Track Meet.

Three meet records fell on Thursday - all on the girls' side - as Missoula Big Sky swept the team titles at the 31st annual spring showcase at Missoula County Stadium.

Last season, Hellgate edged Sentinel and Big Sky in the most closely contested boys' competition in meet history, snapping the Eagles' seven-year reign as city champs. On Thursday the Blue and Gold got its revenge, scoring 78 points compared to 53 for the Knights and 50 for Spartans.

The Big Sky girls, led by triple-winner Kristen Daugherty, were even more dominating as they piled up 87 points to beat second-place Sentinel (54.5) and Hellgate (39.5). It was the Eagles' fifth consecutive girls' title.

"That's 9 out of 10 for the girls and 8 out of 10 for the boys," said Big Sky coach Dan Nile of his program's recent city meet success. "That's an awful good run for us."

Daugherty, a junior, won all three of the jumps to get the Eagles jump-started. She was the defending meet champion in both the long and triple jumps, but added an elusive high jump title to the stash this spring. She soared a personal-best of 35 feet, 3 inches to win the triple jump, went 15-11 1/2 in the long jump and won a three-way tie in the high jump at 5-1 based on attempts.

"I'm feeling good about finally qualifying in the high jump," said Daugherty, who arleady reached state qualifying standards in the other two events. "I really hit a rough patch in that one this year."

Daugherty's exploits were hard to outshine, but on a sunny day Sentinel's Liz Harper and Hellgate's Paige Gilchrist gave it a shot with three individual wins apiece.

Harper, a sophomore, set a record and helped set another while winning the 200-meter dash, 100 and 300 hurdles. Her time of 44.62 seconds in the intermediate hurdles broke the old record of 45.35 set by former Big Sky standout Lindsey Hall just two years ago. Harper also helped the Spartans' 1,600 relay team set a new city record by joining up with Holly Hollinger, Amanda Jaynes and Brianna Olsen to clip the tape in 4:00.12. Harper also won the 200 in 26.20 to move into the state's top 10.

The other record was set by Gilchrist, who swept the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 titles to pull off an amazing feat in itself. She finished the 3,200 in 11:26.44 to shatter the old mark by 21 seconds, which was set by former Hellgate distance star Joan Woodbury in 1981.

The only other multiple-event winner on the girls' side was Big Sky junior Elle Tinkle, who repeated in the 400 and added a javelin title to her list of talents. Morgan Braby (100) and Laura Wemple (shot put) were the Eagles other top placers. Tinkle and Braby each ran a leg on Big Sky's steadily-improving 400 relay team.

Sentinel's Anna Pershouse repeated in the discus with a throw of 125-7, which moved her into fourth place in the state's best.

The Big Sky boys were led by senior Michael Duncan, who won three events and ran anchor on the Eagles' winning

Duncan soared 43-9 1/4 to win the triple jump and teammates Nico Graham and Weston Northrup were second and third. Duncan also won the 400 and long jump.

The Eagles also received a pair of wins in the hurdle events from Austin Lindquist (110) and Jay Owens (300). Also, Vasiliy LeMeza won the high jump and finished second to Ducan in the long jump.

Sentinel had a pair double-winners on the boys' side: senior distance runner Jake Turner (800 and 1,600) and sophomore sprinter Jake Messerly (100, 200). Turner made a push to set the meet record in the 1,600, but finished a few seconds shy of the 37-year-old record set by Hellgate's Rob Reeseman.

Messerly out-leaned Duncan at the finish line of the 100, beating the Eagles' top returner by one-hundreth of a second. But Duncan got his revenge in the 1,600 relay when the two anchor legs took turns passing each other, with the last laugh going to Duncan. Messerly helped the Spartans' winning 400 relay team by catching Hellgate at the end.

Sentinel senior Howard Juneau had his longest throw of the season to win the javelin. He tossed the spear 188-4, which is the third-best throw in the state this spring. Hellgate had a pair of repeat city champs in Adam Peterman (3,200) and Jesse Ginn (shot put). The freshmen city meet is Friday at 4 p.m. at Stegner Field. (Missoulian, May 13, 2011)
