Meet: Seeley-Swan Invitational 5/7

Date: 2011-05-07
MISSOULA - Up until the final timed event at the Seeley-Swan Invitational it was a sucker-free Saturday for Charlo.

Stephen Delaney, a junior hurdler for the Vikings, ran anchor on their 1,600-meter relay that ran second to Darby. But like the Tigers, the Vikings clocked a season-best time.

And PRs are rewarded.

"You get a sucker for each personal record," said Delaney, who swept the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles Saturday. "That's our motivation. Everybody likes suckers."

Darby won the long relay in 3 minutes, 33.02 seconds to push into the top 10 in the state in that event, while Charlo's time - 3:36.67 - edged the Vikings into the lead among Class C schools. Joliet had run 3:38.7.

The race served only to tighten the boys' team battle; Florence scored 84 points to 82 for Charlo and 81 for Darby. The Falcons, who also won the girls' team title, had two wins each from jumper Ross Mangun and thrower Megan Leathers.

Twenty-two teams competed at the meet, held in mostly cloudy, mostly dry conditions at Missoula County Stadium. A few individuals moved into the top tier in the state marks, like St. Regis high jumper Thomas Spencer and Drummond vaulter Jessi Dahl.

Darby's boys had two wins each from Aaron Johnston (100, 400) and Doug Raymer (800 and 1,600), and Deer Lodge standout Brandon Forson neared his season bests while winning the shot put and discus.

And Charlo kept working toward an elusive title at the State C meet, which will be at this venue May 27-28.

For one thing Delaney ran the 100 meters and finished second to Darby's Johnston. Charlo coach Bret Thompson sees the still-growing junior as a 400 runner at state.

"But his running an 11.4-second hand time (in the 100) makes you feel a little bit differently," Thompson added. "He's strong. It kind of seems like your sprinters are more of the tight-muscled guys, and he's more of a lanky kind of guy."

"Since my freshman year I've grown, like, six inches," said Delaney. "And since last year probably four. Everybody says I have these long strides, and I can't tell. It's just how I run."

Thompson said it was last year that Delaney made his big leap, placing in both hurdles races at state behind, among others, teammate Cody Nitschke. Delaney has since broken Nitschke's school record in the 300s, clocking a 39.95 at the Pilcher Top 10 - though he finished second.

"Kody Berget of Libby got the exact same time to the hundredths, and he beat me by two thousandths," said Delaney. "Because I leaned by bending at my waist and he stuck his chest out. They don't go by the top of the head, they go by the torso.

"Coach said, ‘You're supposed to lean like this,' and I'm like, ‘You should've told me.' "

Saturday Delaney was turning toward the camera booth above the finish line, a trick to push his chest forward.

"Smile for the camera," he said.

And collect your reward. Thompson said he's still surprised how excited even his seniors get about his award system. The only damper is the only occasional trip to a dirt track.

"Then they go, ‘Man - no suckers today,' " Thompson said.

Forson came close to his PRs in the shot put, going 55 feet, 9.5 inches, and in the discus, where he threw 187 feet.

Shattering their PRs were the Thompson Falls duo of Chalis Wilson and Dominique Holt, along with Spencer. Each cleared 6-4 in the high jump. Spencer had not gone higher than the 6-0 he cleared while winning last year's State C crown.

Both he and Wilson proved they can go higher yet: After each failed at 6-6 - Spencer won on criteria - first Wilson, then Spencer tried the height as practice. Both made it.

Leathers, a Florence senior, neared her season-best in the discus with a throw of 125-2.5 before a slip led to a cut on her knee and shortened her day. She'd already thrown 33-8.5 to win the shot.

"She's easy to coach," said Tyler Gilder, a former Falcons standout who teaches Leathers in the ring. "Definitely a natural athlete for sure. I don't have to do a lot of work with her - just a little technique and that's it."

Gilder waits for the day when Leathers throws in the 130s. Her 128-7 ranks second in the state for all classes.

"We have someone stand out there at the 140-foot line in practice and she's real close," said Gilder.

The Florence girls, who saw Tess Porch win the 100 meters, scored 71 points to edge Thompson Falls at 68. Superior was third at 64.5.

Hope Reid had another banner day for the Bluehawks, winning the 200 and both hurdles races and hitting a career-best 5-2 in the high jump. The sophomore lost to Seeley-Swan's Holly Beary, who also cleared a personal-best 5-2, on criteria.

Drummond's Jessi Dahl cleared 9-0 in the pole vault; she is unofficially the first Class C girl to go that high this season.

Fairfield's Sydne Steinbach won the triple jump with a mark of 35-1, which is tops among Class B performers. (Missoulian, May 8, 2011)
