Meet: Wayne Estes Invitational

Date: 2011-05-07
ANACONDA — Results from Montana track meets that feature Corvallis’ Paige Squire are starting to sound like a broken record.

Saturday’s results sounded more like multiple broken records.

Squire helped lead Corvallis to first-place in team scores at the Wayne Estes Invitational in Anaconda Saturday by breaking four meet records in the five events she competed in.

She won both hurdles events by a noticeable margin. Her times of 14.36 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 44.28 in the 300 hurdles were both eight-hundreths of a second behind her best times this season.

She roared to a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.36 seconds. Her 400 relay team walked away with the blue ribbon with a meet record time of 49.98 seconds.

The only meet record Squire didn’t claim in her five events was in the 1,600 relay. Corvallis won the gold again as Squire finished at least 75 meters ahead of the second-place finisher.

Corvallis ended up winning both the boys’ and girls’ team trophies.

Belgrade finished second on both sides.

The top area team were the Anaconda girls, who claimed fourth place.

The Copperheads’ only gold in the meet came on Olivia Woods’ effort in the 3,200-meter run.

“She did awesome, especially in front of a home crowd,” Anaconda track coach Jason Buell said. “Strategy-wise, she did great.”

The girls’ javelin saw some of the most exciting action of the day as Harrison’s Taylor Statton walked away with the gold on the last throw in the final heat.

Statton’s toss of 130 feet, 2 inches literally edged out Greer Crabtree’s throw, which was just previous, of 130 feet even.

Statton’s new mark is a season best by nearly eight feet. She has the top throw in Class C so far.

Crabtree came up short of a season best, but the Dillon thrower appears to be prepared to defend her state title in the event from a year ago.

Malia Estes of Anaconda had the best throw of the day until Crabtree and Statton arched back for their final throws. Estes made a toss of 129 feet, 3 inches. She’s the school record holder in the new javelin and was just a couple of inches from a season best.

“I was pleased with Mia,” Buell said. “It’s consistency and that’s what we ask of her.”

The Copperheads had a silver finish in discus and a bronze finish in shot put by Jacqueline Verlanic.

Coach Buell noted that he didn’t have a full team with some athletes gone at the state music competition in Billings.

The only other double-gold winner besides Squire on the girls’ side was fellow Blue Devil Ayden Eickoff as she won the 800 and 1,600 runs.

Dillon’s girls finished sixth. The team had a third-place finish by Alex Brammer in pole vault.

The Corvallis boys won the team gold with a solid all-around effort from multiple athletes. The team had golds by Colby Henderson, Chris Jessop, Logan Connors, Lucas Wolden and Tyler Bermer.

The only meet record on the boys’ side was by Livingston’s Monte Cole with a time of 10 minutes, 3 seconds in the 3,200.

Butte Central gave the best effort of area teams as the Maroons finished seventh. Dillon ended up in 10th with 20 points.

The Maroons had a second-place effort by Jonathan Richards in shotput and a third-place effort in javelin.

The Maroons also scored points with Daniel Morstein in shot put and Zach Kasperick in javelin.

Dillon’s Monte Folsom was the only area gold-medal winner on the boys’ side as he won shot put. His toss of 51 feet, 9 inches is a new season best. He is the defending state champ in the event.

After the meet, Anaconda first-year head coach Buell was thankful for the effort Anaconda athletic director Shawn Hansen and the 100-plus volunteers put forth to make the meet happen.

Most of the teams that competed in Anaconda Saturday will be in competition at the Beaver Booster Meet in Dillon next week. (Montana Standard, May 8, 2011)
