Meet: Great Falls Triangular
Date: 2011-05-07GREAT FALLS - Ideal conditions, perhaps the best so far this spring, brought out the best in Great Falls High senior Ben Vaughan Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Vaughan won the 800 meters and 1,600 meters in season's best times of 2:00.08 and 4:25.55, respectively, to lead GFH to a runner-up finish in a triangular track and field meet. He also ran the second leg on the Bison's victorious 1,600 relay team.
Missoula Big Sky won the boys' team championship, scoring 65 points to defeat GFH (58.5) and Helena Capital (56.5).
Big Sky also captured the girls' team title, tallying 81 points to outdistance Capital (60) and GFH (39).
"Ben had a good day. His times were pretty impressive in both of his races," said GFH coach Dan Brady of Vaughan.
Vaughn's previous best effort in the 800 this season was 2:01.0, which ranked third among Class AA athletes and sixth in the state overall through meets of May 3.
In the 1,600, he shaved almost six seconds off his previous best of 4:31.30, which ranked third in Class AA and sixth overall.
Vaughn and Matt Schmitz, Stevie Paul and Dakotah Kingfisher won the 1,600 relay in 3:34.7, about four seconds faster than Great Falls' previous best this season.
The Bison also won the 400 relay, with Schmitz, Bolton, Kingfisher and Jake Olson equaling a season's-best effort of 43.97.
Olson won the 200 meters in 23.36 and placed second in the 200 with a 11.41, three hundredths of a second behind Michael Duncan of Big Sky.
Kingfisher won the 400 in a season's best of 51.35. "Kingfisher ran well in the 400. He looked strong," Brady said. "His time is dropping, and that's good."
The Big Sky boys scored a bulk of their points in the field events. Ducan won both the long jump and triple jump, Darby Maier was first in the shot put and Cole Baker topped the field in the high jump.
Big Sky's girls had a big day on the track, winning seven of the 10 events. Morgan Braby took top honors in the 100 and 200 and Taylor Rather won both the 1,600 and 3,200. Braby ran a leg on the Eagles' first-place 400 relay team.
Kristen Daugherty was also a two-event winner for Big Sky, taking the long jump and the triple jump.
Capital's Taylor Corne won both the shot put and discus.
Great Falls High's Callee Remsen had a good day in the hurdles. She won the 100-meter event in 16.83 and placed second in the 300s, running a 49.85 to finish 24 hundredths of a second behind Tori Nickol of Capital.
"Overall it was a pretty good effort (by both GFH teams)," Brady said. "It was nice to have some sunshine."
The GFH teams battle C.M. Russell High in the annual city meet on Thursday at Memorial Stadium, then begin final preparations for the May 20-21 Eastern AA divisional meet in Bozeman. (Great Falls Tribune, may 8, 2011)
