Meet: Cascade Lions Club Top 8
Date: 2011-05-05GREAT FALLS - Cut Bank High senior Deni Fitzpatrick came away with three gold medals, including one for her leg on the victorious 400-meter relay team, in the 19th annual Cascade Lions Club Top 8 track and field meet Thursday at Memorial Stadium.
Adam DeBruycker of Choteau took top honors in both the 200 and 400 meters and helped the Bulldogs win the 1,600 relay.
No records were broken during the action, and that wasn't surprising considering that cold, wet weather this spring has caused a lot of meets to be cancelled and forced athletes to practice in 40-degree or colder weather.
Fitzpatrick, however, was just six tenths of a second off the girls' 100-meter hurdles record of 15.3 seconds, set by Rachel Gjesvold of Fairfield in 2000. She broke the tape in 15.96.
Fitzpatrick ran the 300 hurdles in 46.29 for her second win, and got her third while running the third leg on the 400 relay team that won in 51.07, 0.2 seconds off the pace the same team had when it established the meet record a year ago.
Cascade's Mardee Clark, Katelin Smith of Augusta and Shelby Martinez of Winnett-Grass Range each grabbed a pair of medals. Clark was especially strong in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while Smith outran the field in the metric mile and the 3,200. Martinez was superior in the javelin and discus tosses.
In the boys' competition, Chase Ballantyne of Shelby took the 100 meters.
Fairfield's Slade Allen and Gage Iverson of Winnett-Grass Range each captured a pair of gold medals, Allen in the 110 and 300 hurdles and Iverson in the 1,600 and 3,200.
The meet, sponsored by Cascade High School and the Cascade Lions Club, serves as a prelude to next week's District meets. The District 8C and 10C meets will be held at Memorial Stadium on Friday, followed by the District 1B meet on Saturday. (Great Falls Tribune, May 6, 2011)
