Meet: Midland Top 10

Date: 2011-05-03
LAUREL — John Daubert was just hoping to keep up with the competition Tuesday. As it turned out, no one could keep up with him.

The Billings Senior junior won the boys 200- and 400-meter dashes in the Midland Roundtable Top 10 track and field meet at the LHS Sports Complex, clocking a state-best time in the 400 and winning by a nose in a thrilling 200.

“It was a good day,” said a smiling Daubert, who also ran a leg on Senior’s 1,600 relay team. “I didn’t really know what to expect today. I just wanted to run a good time in the 400, and in the 200 I just wanted to keep up with (Billings West’s) Alex Wambauch. He’s been putting up some great times.”

Daubert was the lone double winner in the boys meet. He clocked a 49.9 in the 400, a personal-best time and the fastest time in the state this year. He finished almost a full second ahead of the runner-up, Senior teammate Andrew Monaco.

“I’ve been trying to run a 49 all year — I finally got it,” said Daubert, whose previous personal best was 50.3 last month at the Billings Invitational. “I felt like I ran pretty well. I felt the wind a lot on that backstretch, but I just tried to push through it.”

In the 200, Daubert came from behind to catch West’s Wambauch and Livingston’s Paul Meyer in the final 10 meters and leaned into the tape just ahead of them. Daubert finished in 23.4, followed by Wambauch at 23.79 and Meyer at 23.85.

“The time wasn’t great, but that was a fun race,” said Daubert, who ran a 22.8 last weekend in Helena. “That Livingston kid and Alex really kicked it in at the start. I wasn’t sure if I was going to catch them or not.”

Billings Skyview junior Landon Polkow continued his domination of the 300-meter hurdles, winning by more than two seconds in a time of 39.87. Lewistown’s Bo Descheemaeker was second in 41.97.

“I love this meet,” said Polkow, the defending State AA champion in the 300 hurdles. “Last year I was in the lead and then the wind got me and blew me back to fifth. I really wanted to run well today. I knew the competition would be really strong.”

In addition to defending his state title, Polkow still hopes to beat the school record of 38.5 set by his brother Logan, a 2007 Skyview grad.

"I keep telling him that I'm going to get it," Polkow said, smiling. "We haven't had great weather so far this year. Hopefully we'll get a few warm days to run before the season is over."

Belgrade boasted three winners on the boys side — Joey Vaughn in the 3,200 (10:00.25), Zac Rossman in the shot put (52-0) and Luke Knatterud in the javelin (163-2).

Columbus had a pair of winners: Dustin Sobrero in the 100 (11.62) and Walter Johnson in the triple jump (46 feet, 4 inches).

Johnson's mark in the triple jump is the best in the state this year and a Columbus school record — and more importantly salvaged a day that wasn't going the way the senior had hoped.

"I was having a horrible meet," said Johnson, the defending State B champion in the long jump and triple jump. "I took last (ninth) in the javelin and I didn't clear the opening height in the high jump. When I came over here for the triple jump, I probably had tears in my eyes.

"When I got over here, I was surprised when they told me I was in the finals for the long jump because (in the prelims) I scratched twice and had one jump that was not very good.

"But I had a good jump (21 feet) to finish third in that, so that kind of got me going a little bit and I ended up with a great jump to win the triple. That beats the school record (of 45-8) that was set by Greg Steen in 1977. That record has been a goal of mine for a long time, so the day ended up a lot better than it started."

Senior's Scotty Owens, who previously had the state's best mark this year at 46-1, finished second with a jump of 45-2 3/4. Owens won the long jump with a mark of 21-8.

Other boys winners included Shawn Peden of West in the 800 (2:00.95), Robert Peterson of Skyview in the 1,600 (4:33.07), Heath Hunter of Bozeman in the 110 hurdles (15.01), Lee Hardt of West in the high jump (6-6), Jesse Burman of Miles City in the pole vault (12-0) and Zach Sharp of West in the discus (167-1).
