Meet: John Tomich Invitational

Date: 2011-04-30
BUTTE - Athletes braved the cold and snow — and also enjoyed a bit of sunshine — as Butte Central organizers successfully hosted the 11th annual John Tomich Invitational track meet Saturday at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

The Belgrade girls and Billings Central boys won the team titles, each by a sizable margin, though area teams had some excellent individual performances.

The big mark of the day came in the discus, where Deer Lodge’s Brandon Forson bettered the previous record throw by 18 feet to win the event at 184-7. The next closest throw Saturday was nearly 50 feet back.

“Just getting a mark was the big thing,” Forson said after the event.

The UM-bound senior uncorked his biggest throw of the day in the finals, after a spin of 167 feet, one half inch, in the preliminary round. That beat the 166-11 record set by former Warden teammate David Phillips in 2007, and took the pressure off.

“After that I just relaxed a little,” Forson said. “The weather made it a little tougher, but it was nice to see a good crowd here.”

Forson struggled in the shot put earlier in the day, where he had a short first throw and a scratched second. He used a partial 360-degree spin to establish a mark of 49-5 that was good enough to get him into the finals, though he scratched all three efforts there.

Butte Central standout Jonathan Richards made the best of the situation. He showed up for the shot finals after everyone else had thrown, having just completed running the anchor leg of the Maroons’ sprint relay. Richards won the shot with his last effort, a personal-best 49-8½.

Richards used a glide through the ring that coaches introduced to him just this week.

“I tried it the first time Thursday,” Richards said. “It worked out well today because I was already warmed up from running.”

The heat apparently carried over to the javelin, where Richards won the event with a chuck of 176-7, 13 feet ahead of teammate Zach Kasperick, who was second.

“I was impressed with the way they performed,” central coach Zack Stajcar said of his team. “It was a tough day weather-wise, but the big one today was Jonathan. He went a foot farther in the shot and five feet farther in the jav. Kasperick had his best throw by five or 10 feet too.”

Jake Simkins notched a fourth-place finish in the discus, while Alex Ritter was sixth in the shot. Riley Davis tied for fourth in the high jump to round out a strong field performance for the Maroons.

Andy Ritter scored Butte Central’s only individual track points, taking fifth place in both hurdles races.

“Our throwers packed us around again this week,” Stajcar said.

Central’s girls got most of their points in the sandboxes. Kacie McKeon took fourth in both the triple and long jumps, while Mollie McIntyre made a successful return from injury with sixth-place finishes in both events. McIntyre also tied for sixth in the high jump for good measure.

“Mollie didn’t go her farthest or highest, but she came back good enough to place,” Stajcar said. “Kacie’s battling sore shins and she did a good job.”

Central’s Chandra McCurdy claimed sixth in the 300 hurdles, while the Maroon sprint relay team finished fourth.

Anaconda’s girls were boosted by a pair of wins from distance specialist Olivia Wood. After winning the 1,600 by two seconds, Wood went on to claim the 3,200 by a comfortable margin.

Jacqueline Verlanic prevented a Dillon sweep of the discus by winning the event at 103-1, then took second place in the shot. Malia Estes was second in the javelin while Copperhead teammates Caitlin Sullivan and Taylor Flynn were fifth and sixth. Dana Anderson was second in the 800 and fourth in the 400 for Anaconda as well.

The Dillon girls got wins in the 100 from Emily Pilcher, the javelin by Greer Crabtree and the pole vault by Alex Brammer, then showed great depth in the discus, taking five of six places.

Katie Hawkins was second in the 3,200 and fifth in the mile for Dillon.

The Beaver boys were led by Blaise Riebe, who won the 110 hurdles and the 400, then took second in the 100 and 200 and anchored the second-place Dillon sprint relay team.

“We held Blaise out of the 300 hurdles because he wanted to try the 400,” said Dillon coach Tammi Myers. “That was a good time for his first competitive 400.”

Austin Williams added another Dillon win in the pole vault, where Myers said her jumpers have been visibly improving.

In addition to Forson’s performance, Deer Lodge got a win in the high jump from Rodney Hunter, who cleared 5-8, along with a third in the pole vault. Jacob Senecal was second in the 400 and fourth in the 200.

The Deer Lodge girls didn’t get any individual wins, but placed well, led by third places from Kylie Johnston in the 300 hurdles, Theresa Lombardi in the 3,200 and Kadeshia Clark in the 400.

The meet looked to be in jeopardy after a heavy snow fell overnight, but crews — featuring the McGree brothers and Brian “Fatty” Atkins — shoveled, plowed and swept tons of snow to clear the way for the event to take place.

“It was good to get the meet in,” Stajcar said. “And you can’t do it without a whole bunch of volunteers who give up a Saturday for it.”
