Meet: Whitefish ARM Invitational

Date: 2011-04-30
WHITEFISH - As one spectator said after Taylor Firestone leaped into the sand pit after his final triple jump, "You don't see that too often."

At the 13th annual A.R.M. Invitational track meet on Saturday, the Plains senior sailed 46-feet, 3.75 inches, winning the event handily, shattering a five-year-old meet record and becoming the only person to break 46 feet statewide this season.

And, as the impressed bystanders near the jump pit could attest, it wasn't a fluke, either. Firestone broke 46-feet twice. Both jumps would have won the Class B state title last year by over a foot. Although the state record of 48-2 set by Harry Clark of Cascade in 1983 is still a distance away, Firestone's performance was one for the local history books. He also won the long jump.

Leah Cook of Glacier did just the same in the girls triple jump, winning with 35-9 3/4 and breaking the 2002 meet record of 35-3 set by Whitefish's Joanna Closson.

Glacier had a good day overall as both Wolfpack boys and girls squads came away with team victories.

The boys, led by first-place finishers Richie Boyer, Jacob Leininger, Shane Freese and Tanner Morrison, totaled 134 points. Columbia Falls was second with 84 and Libby was third with 57.5.

For girls, Glacier tallied 105 points thanks to wins by Cook, Heather Fraley, Monique Cannady, Anna Deleray and the short relay team.

The Whitefish girls took second behind the lead of freshman phenom Marlow Schulz. Schulz won both the 100 and 200.

Poor weather continued to hamper the spring track season, but athletes continued finding ways to improve.

Hard work still pays off in the rain.

Boyer, a senior, turned in a personal best in the 1,600.

"I just did some good training in the winter and did some indoor meets and that helped, too. It's just all working out right now," he said.

"It's really nice to have all that work in the winter and running indoors when the weather was bad. Right now I'm just feeling good." (Daily Inter Lake, May 1, 2011)
