Meet: Small School Meet

Date: 2011-04-28
HELENA - Emily Schroeck is a good all-around track and field athlete.

But how good is she with a broom?

Schroeck, a junior for Jefferson High, normally competes in five or six events during a meet. At Thursday’s Small School Track Meet at Vigilante Stadium, she garnered victories in the 100-meter hurdles and pole vault, tied for first in the long jump and placed third in triple jump.

The versatile Schroeck normally runs the relays as well, which prompted the question, does she also sweep the grandstands after the meet?

“Oh…maybe, if they asked me,” the modest Schroeck said with a smile.

The annual meet is comprised of six Class B teams — Townsend, Jefferson, Twin Bridges, Ennis, Choteau and Cascade — along with the two local AA school’s sub-varsity squads. Helena and Capital High’s units, however, were not necessarily matched up with the B schools.

The 5-foot-2 Schroeck was among several individuals that emerged as multiple winners.

She led off with a triumph in the high hurdles, clocking a season-best 17.24 seconds, which she said “really surprised me, because I clipped three hurdles and chopped a step on a fourth.”

In the pole vault, last year’s state runner-up won with a clearance of 9-0, just missing three close attempts at 9-9, which would’ve tied her career-best.

“I turned too early,” she said of her misses.

Schroeck related how she had to borrow a pole from Helena High as a freshman, but since then she’s been using her own personal pole, purchased by her parents.

Of all her events, she prefers the vault, stating that one of her goals is to the break the school record of 10-2.

Other multiple victors Thursday included Townsend’s Colin Hoeffner (100, 200), Kenny Hoeffner (long jump, triple jump) and Breann Watson (800, 1600); and Choteau’s Alisha Breen (discus, javelin, high jump), Jacob Horn (800, 1600) and David Lightner (high jump, pole vault).

Kenny Hoeffner captured the long jump with a leap of 19-2½, a foot short of his personal record; and the triple jump in 39-1, a new PR.

“I didn’t have my mark in the long jump, I was about a foot behind the board, so I need to be more consistent there,” the Bulldog sophomore explained. “But in the triple jump, I hit the board every time.” (Independent Record, April 29, 2011)
