Meet: Western Montana Top 10
Date: 2011-04-26MISSOULA — The wind blew and the temperature was less than comfortable, but athletes at Tuesday’s Russ Pilcher Western Montana Top-10 track meet still managed to knock of some meet records in the 13-year-old event.
Tops was Brandon Forson of Deer Lodge, who set meet records in both the shot put and discus. Forson’s spin of 181-7 in the disc was just slightly longer than the mark he used to set a meet record in 2010, while his mark of 55-11 eclipsed Boulder’s Adam Cordeiro’s 12-year-old toss of 55-2½.
Forson led an area contingent in the shot put, as second went to Dillon’s Monty Folsom, third to Drummond’s Nate Bignell and fourth to Butte Central’s Jonathan Richards.
Butte High’s Mark Huntington won the 110 hurdles and was third in the 300s, while teammate Josh Panasuk ran a 2:04.14 for second in the 800. Zach Bunney blazed to third in the 100, while Cody Carriger was fifth in the 200. The pair ran the third and fourth legs of the winning 400 sprint relay, as Kyle Shaw and Clay Brozovich ran the first two lengths.
“All in all it was a pretty good day,” said Butte High coach Charlie Merrifield.
Butte High’s girls also had a nice showing, as they also won the 400 relay, cutting almost a second off its best time. The team consisted of Elsa Janney, Carlie Haeffner, Mariah Richardson and Erika McLeod.
Janney was second in the 300 hurdles where she shaved a second off her best time, and she was also fourth in the 100. McLeod improved her 400 time in taking fourth, and Kabri Emerson took second in the javelin with a toss of 120 feet.
“We had some pretty good performances,” said Butte High coach Tom Roberts. “Things are coming around pretty well for us.”
Anaconda’s girls had a nice day, led by Malia Estes’ winning throw of 122-2 in the javelin. Olivia Wood was third in the 3,200, Dana Anderson was fourth in the 800 and Jacqueline Verlanic was sixth in the disc.
Boulder’s Emily Schroeck was fourth in the pole vault, just ahead of Dillon’s Alex Brammer.
Other area boys who turned in good performances include Jacob Senecal of Deer Lodge (fourth in the 400), Blaise Riebe of Dillon (fifth in the 300 hurdles) and Cody Pierson (tied for fourth in the high jump). (Montana Standard, April 27, 2011)
