Meet: Swede Dahlberg Invitational
Date: 2011-04-23BUTTE - The Billings West boys' track and field team showed why it's still the team to beat Saturday at the Swede Dahlberg Invitational.
The Golden Bears, who won four State AA titles in a row before a runner-up finish last spring, scored 108.5 points to win the annual boys-only get-together.
West featured two individual winners - Lee Hardt in the high jump and Zach Sharp in the discus - but it also set a state best in the 400 relay by winning the event in 43.32 seconds.
Billings Senior, paced by a pair of wins by Scotty Owens, finished second in the team standings with 83 points. Kalispell Glacier (64.5) was third.
Owens won the triple jump in a state-best distance of 45 feet, 1 inch. He also won the long jump (21-4) and ran a leg on the Broncs' short relay that finished second to West.
Senior's long relay lowered its state-leading time to 3:29.75 with a win Saturday.
Bozeman's Kevin Close (400) and Heath Hunter (110 hurdles) also set state lows with their wins.
The Hawks were fourth in the team standings with 43.5 points and Great Falls (40) was fifth. Missoula Big Sky (34) finished seventh.
Glacier's Jacob Leininger won the 300 hurdles in 39.63 to edge defending AA champion Landon Polkow, who has the state's best mark this spring.
Missoula Sentinel had a pair of winners in senior Howard Juneau (javelin) and Jake Turner (1,600).
Helena Capital's Jason Allred became the first pole vaulter to clear 14 feet this spring. (Missoulian, April 24, 2011)
