Meet: Libby Invitational
Date: 2011-04-21LIBBY - The Columbia Falls boys' and Whitefish girls' track and field teams took home top honors at the Libby Invitational on Thursday.
Led by a trio of double winners, the Columbia Falls boys scored 145 points to edge meet host Libby by nine points.
Distance star Derrick Williams jump-started the Wildcats by sweeping the 1,600 and 3,200. He won the metric mile in 4 minutes, 30.92 seconds, to post the second-fastest time in the state this spring.
Williams won the 3,200 in 10:26.88.
Also for Columbia Falls, Nate Thompson won the long and triple jumps, including the latter in 43 feet, 4 3/4 inches, and Anthony Correa took the 200 and 400.
The Wildcats also lowered their Class A-leading time in the 1,600 relay to 3:33.41, which is the third-fastest time in the state so far.
Libby's Kody Berget won the 300 hurdles in 41.59 and ran a leg on the Loggers' winning 400 relay team.
Troy's Ryan Rayson won the high jump with a mark of 6-3.
On the girls' side, Whitefish won both relays en route to 178 points and a comfortable win against runner-up Columbia Falls (119).
Whitefish's Jessica Sagen swept the 1,600 and 3,200. Her time in the 1,600 (5:34.49) is the best for Class A milers.
Teammate Marlow Schulz won the 100 and 400 for Whitefish. Both Sagen and Schulz ran on the Bulldogs' 1,600 relay team. The 400 relay team turned in a time of 51.42 - good enough to crack the state's top 10.
Libby's Chancey Auge (100 hurdles, javelin) was the only other double winner in the girls' events. (Missoulian, April 22, 2011)
