Meet: Columbia Falls Quad

Date: 2011-04-19
COLUMBIA FALLS - To quote Glacier girls track coach Jerry Boschee, athletes at Tuesday's quadrangular meet were treated to every season - most of them winter.

The snow was thick at times as athletes from Columbia Falls, Glacier, Flathead and Libby competed at Columbia Falls Junior High.

It was coming down hard enough that the Flathead team called as it was leaving Kalispell to make sure the event was still a go.

It was and the coaches used the conditions as a teaching tool.

"Rain, shine, snow or wind, the gun is going to go off and you have got to be ready to compete," said Wolfpack boys coach Arron Deck.

"That was the overall message to the boys today - we get a chance to compete," Deck said.

"Not one kid complained. I'm proud of them. But this is probably (a meet) to remember for awhile," he smiled.

"I'm encouraged by the fact that the athletes competed," said Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge.

"Weatherwise, I think things went fairly well," agreed Columbia Falls' coach Jamie Heinz. "Talking to the coaches, I think they are all happy we got it in. I found out a lot about our team today and it was good," he added.

And there were some great performances, despite the weather.

Flathead's Tess Brenneman turned in a time of 47.35 in the 300 hurdles (that qualifies her for state in that event) and the boys' 800 race was a dandy.

Columbia Falls' Derrick Williams has run the 800 twice this season, Flathead's Zach Perrin had never competed in it before.

But they put on a pretty good show.

Williams' winning time of 1:59.51 is the best in Class A so far this season. Perrin finished second, but his 2:02.31 qualified him to run that event at the Class AA state meet.

It was a race that nearly didn't happen.

Both boys had originally planned to run the 3,200, but that was one of the first events on Tuesday - when it was snowing hard.

Coaches pulled both and Williams' distance coach even sent him home.

"I went home and sat around - and thought it was weird I wasn't at the track meet," Williams said.

Then, the weather got better and Williams' coach called back.

"He called me an hour before (the 800) and said if I could run, and do it healthfully, that I should."

He was back at the track in a flash.

Still, he was nervous.

"I was really worried the first 200. My coach was giving us splits and when I heard him say 27 (seconds), I was worried. I know Zach has a really good aerobic base," Williams said.

He and Perrin are good friends, they train together and they even traveled together for a couple of indoor meets this winter, Williams said.

As for Perrin, he and his coaches "were just curious to see how fast I could run it. I'm good friends with Derrick. I was really happy to have him. I felt really good. I enjoyed the 800.

"My speed isn't as bad as I thought it was. I feel like I have more to give," he said.

"I was super happy."

"I thought that was a great 800 race and I think (Perrin) is capable of running faster," Hodge said.

Other top performances were - Connor Thomas of Flathead, first in shot with a throw of 51-11; Columbia Falls' Kodiak Gimbel won both the high jump (6-1) and triple jump (39-7).

Among the girls, Brenneman also took first in the 100 (13.21) Anna Deleray of Glacier was a double winner in the 200 and 400 (27.54 and 1:01.15) and Flathead's Kelsey Davis won the shot and triple jumps (32-8 and 31-6). (Daily Inter Lake, April 20, 2011)
