Meet: Butte High Triangular
Date: 2011-04-19BUTTE- Despite periods of heavy snow blowing sideways, the Bulldog, Bruin and Maroon track teams got in a triangular meet Tuesday at Charlie Merrifield Track at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
The Butte High girls ran away with the win Tuesday, as did the Helena Capital boys.
Butte Central joined what was originally scheduled as a dual between Butte and Capital after snow forced the cancelation of a meet in Dillon Tuesday.
And though the weather was challenging at times, all the events were completed as scheduled.
“Track is becoming a winter sport,” joked Butte Central throwing coach John Rolich. “The kids are used to it now anyway.”
The victorious Butte High girls were led by Elsa Janney, who won both the hurdles races. Her time of 46.49 in the 300 hurdles was more than a second better than the Class AA qualifying time, while Janney’s 17.23 was good enough to win the 100s.
“That was Elsa’s first time in the 100 hurdles this season,” said Butte girls’ coach Tom Roberts. “She had another good day.”
Janney also ran on both winning Butte High relays.
Kabri Emerson won the javelin at 119-7, but had some familiar competition in the shot. Little sister Rashae Emerson took second in the shot with a put of 34-1, eight inches farther than Kabri. Kaitlyn Rudy claimed the disc for the Butte girls as well.
Bailey Harper popped a 32-8½ to win the triple jump, while freshman Erica McLeod zipped to victory in the 200.
Kinsley Rafish won the high jump at 4-11, and Andie Hogan was tops in the 800 at 2:46.35.
“The weather didn’t help anyone today,” Roberts said. “But the No. 1 thing is everyone came out healthy today.”
Butte Central’s girls were led by Mollie McIntyre’s second-place long jump, while Kacie McKeon was third in the triple.
Roberts sat a number of his runners, as did Butte High boys’ coach Charlie Merrifield. Still, both teams managed to post good times and marks for the day.
Butte high hurdler Mark Huntington knocked another chunk off his 110 time, as he competed under the weather Tuesday. The illness didn’t seem to have much effect in the longer race either, as Huntington sailed to a 41.14 and first place.
“We had a pretty good hurdler out there today,” Merrifield said. “He’s down a little but he ran pretty well today.”
Butte junior sprinter Cody Carriger utilized a new starting position and narrowly won the 100. The 6-foot-8 speedster said he moved his feet farther back in the blocks with good effect.
“It’s helping me come out lower,” he said.
“And faster,” added Merrifield.
Josh Panasuk paced the mile with a 4:55 win Tuesday, while Joel Hollingsworth won the high jump. Jake Dallaserra went 40 feet to win the triple jump and Damien Hayden took the long jump for Butte High at 17-11.
Butte Central’s boys were led by standout thrower Jonathan Richards, who won the shot put at 48-2, and claimed second in the javelin at 152-10.
Riley Davis was second in the triple jump and Kevin Burt took third in the high jump, while Jake Simkins was third in the disc.
“This was great,” remarked Butte Central coach Zack Stajcar. “We didn’t have to travel, and then to finish a meet in four hours is ideal.”
Central’s short relay was third out of three, but the team did manage to shave off a full second from Saturday’s time.
“We had a good day, but it was just good to get the meet in,” Stajcar said.
Merrifield said there was never any doubt about the weather canceling the event.
“Not for me, there wasn’t,” he chuckled. “This is an all-weather track.” (Montana Standard, April 20)
