Meet: Manhattan Invitational

Date: 2011-04-16
BOZEMAN — Marc Swan was a triple winner at the Manhattan Invitational track and field meet Saturday at Van Winkle Stadium. The junior won the 400 with a time of 52.17, the 400 in a time of 2:09.81, and ran a leg on the 1,600 relay team which won with a time of 3:39.50.

“I had a good day. My times were pretty good,” said Swan.

Thanks to Swan, and a well-rounded effort by his teammates, Manhattan coasted to the meet title with 120 points. Defending State B champion Columbus was second with 94 points, while Class A Park County High School was third.

“Marc had a really good day. He didn’t lose today,” Manhattan coach John Sillitti noted. “His 400 time was great. I think that puts him in second place in Class B. That’s the first time that he has ran the open 400 since junior high.”

Columbus beat the Tigers at last year’s Southern B Divisional meet, then won state while Manhattan finished third. With such a big meet Saturday — 22 teams — Sillitti felt the rivals would have been a little closer in the final standings.

“I don’t know if they had their main placers,” said Sillitti. “But that Walter Johnson is a solid jumper, and Dustin Sobrero in the sprints is pretty good. Ethan Shevela is good in the hurdles.

“They are solid in the jumps. I don’t think they have the depth that we have, but they have talented kids. They have kids that their points will carry all the way to state. We have some kids that are scoring points and have some that will carry quite a few points to state as well.”

Manhattan won five of the 17 events with Austin Jacobsen winning the javelin with a throw of 166-feet, 9-inches, and the 400 relay team winning with a time of 45.35.

It was the Tigers’ depth that ultimately carried them to victory. Tim Royce finished second in the 1,600 and 3,200, trailing only Monte Cole of Livingston. Royce ran a time of 4:49.15 in the mile and had a time of 10:34.18 in the two mile. Cole had times of 4:40.14 and 10:26.96, respectively.

“That’s probably the first time that we have had only one since Richie Pemberton ran in 2002. Usually we have six to 10,” said Sillitti. “Cody Hart was sick but he tried to run the mile. I think he would have placed in the mile if he would have felt better.”

Braedon Niemi placed in three events, taking second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.21. He was also third in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 200. The junior also ran legs on the relays.

“Sprint relay looked good. We still have some things to iron out with that,” said Sillitti. “There still was a shaky exchange.”

It was the first meet where the Tigers’ short relay team finished after bad exchanges led to disaster in Belgrade and Dillon.

On the Girls side, it’s been quite a start for Manhattan’s girls track and field team. After winning their first meet in two years while kicking off the 2011 season April 2 in Dillon, the Tigers gave another impressive performance at their own meet Saturday in Bozeman.

Led by throwers Cody Francis and Carlee Smith, the team tallied 46 points en route to a third place finish at the Manhattan Invitational at Van Winkle Stadium.

Class C Shields Valley, which won four events, took the meet title with 77 points. Class A Anaconda was second with 56 points, while Manhattan Christian placed fifth (38) and a depleted Three Forks squad was 10th with 19 points.

“The girls scored 46 points and took third,” Manhattan coach John Sillitti noted. “I knew that with all of the teams that we had here that the points would be spread out ... 22 teams here.”

The Tigers picked up points in the sprints, jumps, throws, pole vault, and relays en route to edging Boulder by four points for third place.

Francis was the team’s lone winner, taking the shot put with a heave of 32-feet, 6-inches. She also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 96-7.

Smith finished as a double placer as well. The junior was second in the discus (99-0) and fifth in the javelin (98-5). (Belgrade News, April 19, 2011)
