Meet: Cal Wearley Meet

Date: 2011-04-06
HAVRE — It’s official. With an array of teams finally getting a meet behind them, the 2011 track and field season is here.

Wednesday at the Havre Middle School ]Track in Havre, the Class C North Star Knights held their annual Cal Wearley track meet. And with 29 teams in attendance, this year’s meet may have held the best talent to date.

In the boys field, it was Fairfield grabbing the No. 1 spot with 84 points, while Malta finished No. 2 with 63 and Fort Benton finished No. 3 with 57. And rounding off the team finishers, Havre finished with 49, Chinook finished with 47, Glasgow finished with 28, Power finished with 28, Whitewater finished with 21, North Star finished with 18, Simms finished with 16, Augusta finished with 14, Cascade finished with 13, Denton finished with 11, Valier finished with 10, Sunburst finished with eight, Belt finished with seven, Chester/J-I finished with six, Hinsdale-Saco finished with five and Cut Bank finished with three. Big Sandy, Winifred-Roy, Geraldine and Turner all finished with two points each, while Highwood, Rocky Boy, Box Elder, Hays-Lodge Pole, Dodson and Heart Butte all finished with zero.

On the girls’ side, it was Glasgow which finished in the No. 1 spot with 85 points, while Cut Bank was No. 2 with 69 and Belt was No. 3 with 48. And finishing up the girls field, Havre finished with 37, while North Star finished with 35, Fairfield finished with 34, Denton finished with 30, Augusta finished with 27, Winifred-Roy finished with 26, Malta finished with 21, Geraldine finished with 19, Cascade finished with 18, Chinook finished with 12, Power finished with 10, Chester/J-I finished with eight, and Hinsdale-Saco, Sunburst and Valier all finished with two points each.

“I though the weather cooperated a lot better than people expected.” North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. “Most of the teams here have been practicing inside, so we were all just anxious to get out here, get on a track, participate and compete against somebody besides our own athletes.”

The Hi-Line got good production from a handful of teams on Wednesday.

The Sugarbeeters' No. 5 finish on the boys side was led by Kaylan Johnons who placed in three events. Johnson finished third in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter with times of 2:17.6 and 5:16.8, and fourth in the 3,200-meter with a time of 11:23.0. Brandon Riphenburg also finished second for the Beeters with a distance of 121-0 in the discus, while Taylor Erskine finished fourth in the 200-meter with a time of 24.6. Tyler Molyneaux grabbed a No. 1 finish in the discus with a toss of 130-4, and the short relay finished second (2:47.8), while the long relay finished sixth (4:08.1).

The North Star boys also had a good outing, placing in four events.

Connor Kline placed in three events, grabbing third in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.4 and 45.0 seconds, respectively. Kline also leaped 10-0 for a fifth-place finish in the pole vault. Jordy Donovan also placed fourth in the 1,600-meter with a time of 5:17.7.

The C/J-I Hawk's Erik Kelly cleared 10-6 for a third-place finish and the Pioneers’ Justin Stevens grabbed a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter with a time of 25.3 seconds. The Tornadoes got two No. 6 finishes from Travis Hofer. Hofer cleared 19-5 in the long jump and leaped 39-0 in the triple jump.

On the girls side of things, the Hi-Line also saw a lot of good production for being so early in the season.

The hosting Knights top finish came by Lisa Carlon’s No. 1 finish in the long jump with a distance of 16-10. And Shelby Lipp gave the Knights two top finishes. Lipp was third in the discus with a toss of 90-11 and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 29-11. Jordan Spicher also finished fourth with a time of 53.0 in the 300-meter hurdles and Bettie Carlon finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 14-11. The Knights short relay also finished third with a time of 54.9.

“We (boys and girls) competed really well,” Campbell said. “I was proud of a lot of what we did. I think we are just like every other team, there are some nagging injuries and stuff like that because this is the first time we pushed ourselves, but I think we competed well. It’s a good first step and at least we have an idea of where we are at heading into the rest of the season.”

The Sugarbeeters were led by Kayla Hanson, placing in two events. Hanson finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.8 and fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 32-2. Laramie Pursley also finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 84-8.

And the Hawks were led by Shari Belcher and Katelyn Graff. Belcher finished sixth tin the long jump with a jump of 14-10 and Graff grabbed a No. 2 finish in the pole vault with a toss of 8-0.

Overall the Cal Wearley meet was a success one for all participants. With the late winter storms wreaking havoc on the track season early, teams have been starving for competition. And with all the talent that was present on Wednesday, teams should have gotten a very good look at their squad and where they stand.

“This meet has gotten a reputation of being a high quality meet,” Campbell said. “I always tell my kids, that if you can place at this meet you can place anywhere. We had 29 teams here today, and we got a lot of bigger schools that we haven’t had here (Havre varsity, Malta, Glasgow, Cut Bank, Fairfield), so yeah, you aren’t going to find that kind of competition like this at many meets during the season.”
