Meet: Missoula Invitational

Date: 2011-04-16
MISSOULA - Flathead's Tess Brenneman, center, competes during the final heat of the 200-meter dash at the Missoula Invitational on Saturday at Big Sky high school. Brenneman took home the event win with an official time of 26.17-seconds.

To the usual suspects - Tess Brenneman, Paige Squire and Jake Turner - at Saturday's Missoula County Invitational you can add some up and comers.

For every win by Squire, Corvallis' peerless hurdler, freshman teammate Sadi Henderson added another. And while Turner, Sentinel's senior standout distance man, cruised to the 1,600 title, he didn't quite catch Kalispell Flathead sophomore Zach Perrin in the day's first race, the 3,200.

Eighteen boys' teams and 17 girls' squads competed under threatening skies at Missoula County Stadium. Kalispell Glacier won the boys' title, averting a sweep by Coeur d'Alene, which rode distance standout Kinsey Gomez to the girls' crown.

A little rain fell, but the fact that only one record fell - Squire zipped through the 300-meter hurdles in 44.20 seconds - was just as much due to the dearth of action for most of the athletes.

It was Missoula Sentinel's first meet, for one example. In addition to Turner, the Spartans got a win from sophomore Jake Messerly in the 100 meters.

"First time we've run all year," Spartans' coach Dane Oliver said. "It is what it is - it gave the kids time to get in shape. They were excited to compete."

Turner's Saturday turned out to be bittersweet. He'd hoped to leave enough in the tank after the 3,200 - he ran 9 minutes, 32.87 seconds to Perrin's 9:30.89 - to go low in the 1,600.

"I think I might've gotten the school record today," Turner said of his two-mile. "I just drafted off (Perrin) the whole race, conserving energy. We talked on Facebook last night, and he wanted to focus on the two-mile and I wanted to work on the mile."

Turner won the 1,600 easily, but lacking a rabbit to chase he clocked a 4:26.51.

"When I ran my 4:19 (at the Brooks PR in Seattle) I was with the best in the nation, and they just pulled me along," Turner said. "It's just harder without somebody right in front of me who's faster than me, or right behind me pushing me."

He provided that service for Perrin, who felt Turner making a move in the 3,200 and "just started kicking super hard." But Perrin felt unprepared for the distance double; he finished his 1,600 in 4:39.33. Not bad for a sophomore.

"He's going to be quick his senior year," Turner said.

You could say the same thing about Sentinel's Jake Messerly, who was second in the 200 to Coeur d'Alene's Carlos Martinez, then switched places with the Viking sprinter in the 100. Messerly won in 11.25 seconds.

"He's always had some speed, but I think he surprised everybody with how fast he's progressed," Oliver said. "He's got some talent. He's figuring out in the classroom and he's figuring out here that the hard work is starting to pay off. If we keep him focused, he's going to be special."

Glacier, getting a hurdles sweep from Jacob Leininger and wins from Shane Freese (high jump), Kyle Griffith (triple) and Tanner Morrison (discus), scored 101 points. Coeur d'Alene was a distant second with 58, followed by Missoula Big Sky at 56 and Hellgate at 55.

Flathead and Class B Darby followed with 49 points. The Tigers got wins from Aaron Johnston in the 400 and Doug Raymer in the 800, and both ran on their winning long relay (with Raymer running a 50.5-second split).

Raymer's winning 800 time of 1:56.53 broke Darby's 18-year-old school record, set by Keith Hellyer.

Corvallis' Colby Henderson pushed Raymer, running 1:59.77.

Hellgate had wins from vaulter Ryan Hover, who cleared 13 feet, 6 inches, and from Jesse Ginn in the shot. Ginn threw 50-3 1/2 to win the meet for a second straight season.

Victor's Kurt Manely edged Sentinel's Howard Juneau in the javelin, and Stevensville's Joshua Haynes won the long jump. Missoula Big Sky high jumper Dan Miller cleared 6-4, but lost to Glacier's Freese on criteria.

Brenneman, one of many standouts for the Flathead Bravettes, cruised to a win in the 200 meters in 26.17 seconds, and leaped 17-6 to win the long jump.

Flathead also got a win from Kwyn Johnson in the triple jump, but the Bravettes' 82 points was good for just third. Ahead of them were Couer d'Alene (104.5) and Corvallis (96.5).

Squire was unbeateable, nearing her personal best in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.45 (she ran 14.37 last season) and breaking Polson product Kasey Harwood's 7-year-old stadium record in the 300s.

She added a 57-second split on the Blue Devils' winning long relay for good measure; Squire was named the ABC girls' track MVP for the meet.

Yet she had her adventures in the short relay. Running in between Nikki Barron and Lakyn Connors, Squire may have taken off too soon ahead of the first baton exchange. She made sure that didn't happen on her handoff, overrunning Connors.

"Better than her leaving early, though," Squire noted, laughing. "We've been having some problems there, to be sure. We'll get it down.

"I felt good - my leg had been hurting me and it was nice to able to go 100 percent after the last couple weeks."

The Blue Devils, for the record, still ran 51.92 - good for fourth in the short relay. Great Falls Russell won that event.

Corvallis countered with another freshman win in the 800, from Ayden Eickhoff. Sadi Henderson won the 100 and 400, outdueling Brenneman in the latter to win in 60 seconds.

"She's great - she's just a great competitor," Squire said of Henderson.

Belgrade's Lindsey Halgren won the shot put and discus to claim the ABC girls' MVP award. the AA field award went to Flathead's Johnson, and the AA track award went to Gomez.

On the boys' side, Glacier's Griffith (field) and Leininger (track) were MVPs, along with Darby's Johnston (track) and Victor's Manely (field) for ABC. (Missoulian, April 17, 2011)
