Meet: Helena-Great Falls Dual
Date: 2011-04-05HELENA — Helena High’s track and field season started slow — four days late to be exact, but the Bengals didn’t stutter out of the blocks Tuesday at Vigilante Stadium.
With gusty winds whipping across the infield and a chill in the air, the Bengals swept Great Falls High in a meet that made up for a three-team tilt sacrificed last Friday because of bad weather in Great Falls.
One of those athletes who appeared to be having fun was junior standout Matt Barker, who matched his career best with a win in the 1,600-meter run after jousting with Great Falls senior Ben Vaughn and a headwind along the backstretch. Vaughn, who will don the purple and gold of Carroll College next year, grabbed the lead with about 200 meters to go, but Barker kicked past him to win in 4 minutes, 36 seconds.
